remember, in the 80s, that plastic flower that would bob and sway to the music if you put it on top of your speaker? here's the 21st century answer: the Bahia Sisters.

Sir Kurt: A woman with a vibrating towel?
Yesterday was Camellia's dad's commitment ceremony, and it was fascinating. A very religious ceremony, held at the Trinity Episcopalian Church on Kirkwood & Grant (Bloomington). One of the church's main pastors is a lesbian woman, and several members of the church read various Bible passages that condone homosexuality.
The most vivid one was 1 Samuel 18:1-5, the story of Jonathan and David (who later became King David). It reads like a homoerotic gladiator story (isn't that redundant?). Here it is from the King James version:
1 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 2 And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house. 3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. 4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle. 5 And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's servants.
There are two primary lesbian couples in the Bible. The story of Naomi and Ruth is a bit problematic as an example, as they were mother-in-law and daughter-in-law; Mary and Martha were also arguably gay, which lends new meaning to that old Gospel standard, "O Mary Don't You Weep, Tell Martha Not to Moan."

sleepless in cincinnati, in four acts:
1) il mio fratello wrote some kind words about il mio babbo.
2) laura's new housemate mik makes some interesting observations about the differences between political terms as they're applied in australia and the u.s.
3) imho, choosing one's location in a fluctuating rent market is analogous to investing in the stock market. buy low : sell high :: rent low, move high. however, the low and high wouldn't relate to rent prices in this analogy; they'd relate to the ratios of rent cost to take-home pay. in butler county (suburban cincinnati), that ratio went from 25.8% in 1990 to 37.5% in 2000. i'm curious to find how those rates compare in other cities. (or perhaps i'm sounding pretentious.)
4) have any of you heard kim fox's moon hut? great album, sadly relegated to the great cosmic cut-out bin by major-label politics. (interesting album title, too.) i always wondered what happened to her: and here she is! at least, i think it's her. (it's my own little wil wheaton moment. speaking of which: say what you wil , but he has a talent for satire.)

well, if any of you freakin' midwesterners are missing SF, click here for a really cool real-time video...you can swing the camera around and get all kinds of views.
Elissa, you can have a new career being used to sell chocolate, alcoholic drinks and sexy underwear. What do dyed-redheads get?

y'all might recall laurent castellucci... the guy who was teaching assistant for the advertising course i took at IU, who stayed in touch with laura, and appeared at the griddle shows in paris (much to my surprise).
wacky québécois guy who enjoys pro wrestling fan fiction (bizarre), and whose sister is a folk songwriter in LA. laurent's a medical writer -- writes about med tech for doctors -- so it's no surprise that he sent along the following: what horrible infectious disease are you?
rogue, here's a 1000sq foot "artists studio space," downtown cincinnati, for $450. kurt and i were shooting pool last night, and large, very strong gin & tonics were $2.25. fuckin' a. cheap coffee refills, too.
my question is: since the dot-com boom didn't help cincinnati at all, does that mean the dot-com bust won't hurt it as much?

Gack... Gasp... 1700sq foot loft downtown for $850...oi.
Miz Rini - you taunt us Chicagoans too...that's ok though. (BTW - they lowered the sell price on my apartment. 650 sq jr 1br for a mere $180K. Any takers...esp. people who would like to buy then lease back to me for less than I pay now?)
Helas.

Before you move to Georgia, make sure you take off your turban. I think it's funnier that his remark is being called lacking in "political judgement" and not, say, intelligence or sensitivity. We don't care who you offend, but you may ruin your political career.
Also, I want to invite everyone to read the cutting edge journalism of my high school paper, The Cannon. I especially like the line "September 11, 2001 is a day that will from now on live forever in infamy." I don't know why, maybe I'm impressed with their use of the word "myriad", uh, I mean "infamy". They have apparantly been a little lax in updating the site, counting 7,000 people killed in the attack. But, they do give us an indepth report on Anthrax, telling us that "America now has a new worst fear. The fear of being unable to go on with normal activity without becoming victim to one of the worst biological agents known to us." Well, at least they can read.
And, just to be particularly mean, I thought I would taunt all my SF friends with some midwest rents.

speaking of brothers, mine rawks! aw, a wannabe media critic, just like his big sis! *beams with familial pride*
Just think, Guy, all along Tunesmith (which has a new page, peeps) (*cough*) coulda been getting screwed by Microsoft and been broke that way instead. ;p
Welcome, KurtyK, faerie-bro to the Seal King! Alex, the photo is Barce-fucking-lona! My imaginary home. View from Parc Guell. Quick-link to blog now above.
Just realized that everyone here who's blogging recently is in the midwest. Phoo on all of you!!! cries the lonely Californicator.

Laura, I like the new digs. I can't identify the photo though, could you clue me in? Is it San Francisco? Also, I miss the more direct link to the little blog box. I've just gone online for the first time in about a week, and I feel like I've returned to a country that I'm familiar with, though I have a bit of that culture shock of return. Everything looks brighter. I had thirty eight e-mails from friends in my inbox, mostly complaining that I haven't been able to be reached by phone. Well, I officially have a Chicago phone number which can be had just by asking. Maybe I'll print up some post cards with the new address book entry and send those out. In any case, Chicago is being really great just now, even if Elissa is more used to a gentler climate. We'll be driving up to Green Bay to spend Thanksgiving with my family and pseudo-extended family of Marxist college professors. I can't wait to see what our friend S.F.lissa makes of it up there. I'm hoping that she'll analyze it for me. We've been having a really great time. In other news, I just got an intriguing work offer over the internet, unfortunately the work is all in Manhattan - my timing is way, way off. It would have been fun, though, photographing parties.
Take care every one, and have a great thanksgiving, though I can't imagine a year with less to be thankful for than this one. Perhaps everything will be redeemed in December.

Amy is my sister-in-law. Gordo is somewhere in the neighborhood of 24 - don't ask me how he got the teaching gig (actually he deserves it - he teaches tech theater and theater history, designs their sets, manages the theater complex etc.)...but it probably has to do with knowing the principal (who used to be the head of our middle and Jr. High school, and whose sons went to high school with Alura and me).

ohhh, now i see why you were asking me if i went to ccd. how much younger is your bro? is he 23 or so and already a teacher at country day? damn. and would that make amy strain your sister-in-law, or your mother?
being in ohio is causing me to rediscover the joy of large fish and small ponds. e.g.: homunculus, dan walzer, and spencer's friends (the fairmount girls) are all nominated for the 2001 cincinnati entertainment awards. as is my ex-girlfriend's courtney's friend, lucky spaulding. vicarious fame is exciting!

M. Seal -
Would love to join in Cinci for Freekbass - unfortunately the CTA doesn't have a line which goes down to Ohio. Perhaps my little bro would be interested. :) Not that I really recommend asking him - he might say yes.

Here's a chat with RAWA spokesperson Sahar Saba on women's rights now that the Taliban is retreating. Nothing they haven't been saying before, but she got the chance to say it to CNN, which I hope will reach more people. In other news, winter is making Indianapolis it's bitch, last night it was 30 degrees...not much warmer this morning. Although, the factory I sit across the street from looks really nice in this grey light. It's all cold and stony, but from the top floor there's this warm orange glow coming from the windows. I wonder if I took pictures, would they think I'm a spy?

kurt saw san francisco's own captured by robots for $5 in cincinnati, and said it was the most bang for his entertainment dollar that he'd gotten in ages. (if kurt was a contributor to the blog rather than just a reader, he could describe the experience... hint hint...)
meanwhile, brian courtney recommends freekbass, cincinnati's loopiest funk band -- it's led by the former bass player from shag, that excellent bootsy collins protege project.
trish! rogue! welcome back! trish, you and chris should come to cincinnati and see freekbass with us. rogue, you should too, but asking a six-hour drive from someone is different from a 90-minute one.
(btw, kurt: i discovered that ol' dan walzer has followed in the venerable footsteps of brian schwab. that means that almost 1% of our high school classmates became professional jazz musicians.)

aaiight, all you punkus (that would be a 3-yr-old's version of "punk-ass") people, zis OK? I'd want you guys to supply me with lots of pics to rotate in that spot, your own or funny ones on the web.
OK, here's your link for the night: La Llorona. I saw a short film on her on Friday night, and someone in the audience mentioned this site afterwards. I guess she's a Lilith/Medea type of figure in some Latin American cultures (my Mexican companion didn't know much about her, he'd had La Ciguanaba instead), one who drowned her children, and there's still many "sightings" of her today.
(yes, I'm still awake...wanted to see the meteor shower...it wasn't as many as expected, but still kinda neat. Couldn't stand the freezing cold on my deck for too long, though)
