My irritation for the day: Bush giving $43 million to the Taliban for "humanitarian" reasons, and Colin Powell, while announcing the cash, saying he hopes they'll quit with the whole human rights abuses thing. I'm sure getting free unconditional money will be a HUGE motivation for them to start behaving. I wonder why the U.S. didn't think handing over millions to Iraq would accomplish the same thing, but that sanctions would?
Anyway, Butch sent me this story on the conservative IWF's anti-feminist ad campaign on college campuses. Apparently they did it because of Horowitz's recent ads denouncing reparations for slavery, the resulting controversy of which "proved" that colleges were bastions of commie thinking and intolerance of right-wingers. What FAIR and Kevin's new girlfriend :) Naomi Klein point out is that while all this hubbub is going on about identity politics and free speech on campus, the true censorship of views is those which criticize corporations. At Kent State, where Coke has exclusive vending rights, the student council rejected Amnesty International's request for funding to bring in a human rights speaker -- because he was going to criticize Coke and their involvement in Nigeria. Many environmentalist ads that point out corporate pollution and the like are routinely rejected by papers who rely on corporations for advertising.
The plot sickens...

In the Bay Guardian's depressing cover story this week on the dot-com bomb, I found my favorite metaphor for the day: "But for the nondigerati, finding an affordable apartment continues to be as likely as getting a useful answer out of Jeeves." Heh, says the former Jeeviant. (redux 4th paragraph from bottom) (but it was 2 months, not one)
Indiana, the den of iniquity! From an inside.com interview with Donna F. of the band The Donnas:
I would marry her [Christina Aguilera].
She's a slut. She makes out with everybody. She tries to get on like Enrique Iglesias and Ricky Martin and Fred Durst. She had a bad upbringing. She comes from one of those places where it's okay to be a slut.
Where is that?
I forget where she comes from.
Indiana?
Yeah, Indiana.

The situation in my second favorite country is rotten:
7 tv stations: 4 of them are privately held, 3 of them are controlled by the government (RAI is the equivalent of the BBC). 3 of the privately owned channels are owned by Silvio Berlusconi - who was elected PM of Italy two weeks ago. The leftists, who have controlled RAI for the past 6 years, are currently being sacked and being replaced by agents of the NEO-FASCIST NATIONAL ALLIANCE PARTY led by Gianfranco Fini - evidently this was how Berlusconi bought their support for his now governing coalition. This means that Berlusconi will control approx. 90% of television news.
Meanwhile, on the reproductive health front: abortion will be illegal in Italy by July. The legislation has been drafted, it's in parliament, and it has the votes to win.
Fascism is the new grey.

I already e-mailed everyone about this, but Sir Kelvmore says I should blog it anyway...the Colonel Knowledge website is up, the product of way too many hours of Laura-labor. We put the final touches on the CD art late last night, went to bed around 3, alarm went off at 6. I think I need to yak now. The spyboys are headed off tonight, meaning I've got all of June to myself to do...something, I dunno.
