Morris was one of the first women to become a full-time photojournalist. She worked for the Associated Press and PM magazine, and often focused on people's facial expressions rather than simply documenting an event. And even though her primary focus was photography, she often surprised the journalists she accompanied by asking people questions herself, even during an interview.
Morris had a lot of physical stamina, as she had to carry heavy camera equipment everywhere she went, and usually had to walk because her job wouldn't pay for transportation. She had to be able to push through crowds and balance herself in strange positions to get good shots. Sometimes she wore comfortable pants, which drew stares because it was socially unacceptable for women to wear pants in the 1940s and 50s. She was the only female photojournalist in New York, and was unusual because she covered general assignments, something females did notdo, whether it was writing or photographs. Her editor loved sending her on assignments where women had not gone before, such as boxing arenas and baseball stadiums, because the people would be very surprised when she arrived to do her job.
Morris ended up writing articles for PM because her coworkers thought she was a good reporter, but her main focus was photography. In addition to documenting the news, she did photos for advertisements and photographed many famous people, but she said the job is not very glamourous because it is such hard work.
Morris covered the news visually, instead of with words. If you have access to a camera (many places sell cheap disposible cameras that you can use once), try taking some pictures of an event, like a school sports game or a parade. Try to get good action shots, and pictures of how people react to what is going on. Walk around and decide on a shot before you take it, or try to get in a good position or angle so that you are sure to get a great shot when something exciting happens. Be aware of your surroundings when you are looking through the lens so that you do not get hurt.
