Geyer is known for writing columns on foreign affairs. She has interviewed world leaders, been all over the world, and had her life endangered by her reporting in other countries.
In the 1960s, Geyer became famous on her first assignment when she travelled with an army through the jungle in Latin America. She was the only woman correspondent in that area, and stayed there writing about revolutions for a few years for the Chicago Daily News. She later wrote books about the political situation and leaders in other countries. Although right now she writes opinion columns, she makes sure she does solid reporting before she writes, and thinks that reporting is the most important part of her column and book writing. She tries to write rationally about complex issues without taking sides. She still travels in other countries, and likes immersing herself in other cultures. In fact, she writes her columns from many unusual places, and sometimes has to write columns out by hand and fax them to her paper to print.
Geyer believes a big problem today is that people around the world don't understand each other or know enough about how others live. She has spent so much time travelling that she often understands foreign issues better than most politicians. She is interested in the psychology of world leaders, and is known for predicting world events before they happen, because she has such a good understanding of how people think in other countries.
Foreign affairs are often difficult to understand or relate to what's happening to people in this country. But because Geyer tries to understand people's cultures, rather than simply the events, she is a better reporter.Do you have friends from another country? Do you know anyone's parents who weren't born here? Talk to them and learn about their customs and beliefs. Read books about people in other countries, and try to see how they view the world, and how it may be different from how you see it. By knowing people from other cultures, and understanding how their lives may be different from yours, you will have an easier time understanding world events.
